Betsy DeVos and Educational Ideas

Betsy DeVos isn’t someone who thinks that it’s okay to just do absolutely nothing. She adores making the most out of her days. That’s the reason that she’s constantly busy. People spot her in attendance at all kinds of events around the United States. They see her at the airport on both coasts. They see her taking part in all kinds of charitable and philanthropic missions everywhere. There’s never a dull moment in the life of Mrs. DeVos. She doesn’t want there to be one, either.

DeVos is lucky enough to be married to a man who genuinely comprehends how fleeting life is. That’s why he keeps as busy as she does. Richard DeVos doesn’t sit around wasting his precious time. “Dick” likes to keep himself busy as a bee. He works on all kinds of business projects for the Windquest Group. That’s not the only thing that he does. He also thinks in detail about the West Michigan Aviation Academy in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This academy is a widely known charter school that doesn’t have a standard backdrop. It’s situated at Grand Rapid’s energizing airport. This isn’t strange to anyone. It’s an educational institution that’s geared towards aspiring pilots. It’s geared towards youngsters who have dreams that pertain to going into the aviation field in general.

Betsy DeVos used to be named Elisabeth Prince. She still feels like that same exact person, too. People called her Elisabeth when she was in attendance at Calvin College. This is a Holland, Michigan powerhouse in the educational sector. DeVos did so much while she was a Calvin College pupil. She even took part in countless political happenings on the school’s campus. She did a lot of campaigning. No one could ever say that DeVos hasn’t been a political aficionado for a long time. Her political passions can be traced all the way back to the seventies. People may even be able to trace them before that. DeVos was born at the closing of the fifties.

There aren’t any people who have complaints about DeVos’ work ethic. Her work ethic is practically unsurpassed. Her husband’s work ethic is pretty similar, though. They like to talk about their jobs with great frequency. Betsy is America’s Secretary of Education. She got that job from President Donald J. Trump. President Trump is 100 percent pleased with his selection, too. He doesn’t regret his recruitment decision even for a second. DeVos likes to ponder the educational track any time she can. She likes to think about sectors of education that are relevant as well. She constantly thinks about educational choice and its future. She even devotes a lot of time to thinking about educational vouchers these days.

ClassDojo – The Future of Education

ClassDojo is an app that was developed to enhance communication with educators and parents. Since its inception in 2011, ClassDojo has increasingly become part of United States education system. The app is currently used in more than 90% of all pre-K thru middle school age institutions. Because of its popularity, educational institutions from Spain to Australia are using the app as well, up to 25% of its institutions using the app.

The app makes it possible for educators to communicate with parents regarding their child’s scholastic and behavioral performance. Not only does the app aid with communication with parents, but also with students. The app gives students an opportunity to express concerns and go over curriculum with educators one-on-one. ClassDojo has changed the culture of education by giving students an outlet to share their successes, by giving parents an opportunity to keep abreast of their child’s scholastic successes, and by giving educators an opportunity to bring the community together with communication.

Currently the leadership behind ClassDojo is in the process of raising funding to develop more innovative features and partnerships with the current app. The plan for the future of ClassDojo is to incorporate a new feature to monetize and go beyond just a communication app. The new innovative feature will surpass communication by integrating the use of tutorials for parents-students to work together on their educational path.

With the new feature called “Beyond School,” ClassDojo hopes to take the app into the homes of students and maximizing the full potential of ClassDojo. Beyond School will give parents an opportunity to encourage their child not only scholastically, but also to flourish the child’s good habits, skills, and create a goal oriented attitude. ClassDojo plans to continue to push further to make future improvements on the ClassDojo app.

Rocketship Education Implementing A “Window” Program Aimed At Helping Young Black Men

There are always education experts and activists who are talking about improving opportunities for both a better education and life for disadvantaged black youth, but not too many have adopted a mentorship program like the one that one Rocketship Education school in Nashville has taken up. The program is known as “Windows,” and it was started by Chris Evans, an instructor at this school who came across a problem of disruptive young black students at the school, and he realized they needed a personal intervention since they really had no father figure in the home. Evans himself said he grew up in a disadvantaged situation and really had nobody there to help him choose a different road than the usual school-to-prison route, so in keeping with Rocketship Education and their mission of empowering students he decided to start taking these young boys under his wing.

But it isn’t just Evans who spends time having real life conversations about what it’s like growing up in the black community and difficult family situations. Even some older student athletes from HBCUs who know they’re role models have embraced the opportunity to mentor these young students and encourage them to excel academically and break the mold. So far this has created a culture of brotherhood with the students pushing each other to do better, and it’s seen academic progress improve at this Rocketship Education school.

Rocketship Education began in the year 1999 as more of a private Catholic school when a priest named Father Mateo Sheedy realized there were so many children in his parish that didn’t qualify academically for many prestigious universities. So he decided to open a scholarship program, and then some local businessmen decided to expand on that by opening up a school. The first Rocketship Education school was in a local church with limited capacity and an air conditioner that didn’t work. So they raised the funds to open Mateo Sheedy Elementary School in San Jose, CA, but that was just the beginning of the Rocketship Education charter school network.

Today, Rocketship Education has nearly 20 schools that operate in the Bay area, Nashville, Milwaukee and Washington DC. Their mission of empowering students to succeed is built on the following three pillars:

  • Personalizing learning so that each individual student can learn the subject the way that best matches their ability
  • Talent development which brings out the best in instructors
  • Parent power which ensures parents are involved in the education process as well

Rocketship has been not only using innovative approaches to education; they’ve been invested in changing lives and strengthening local communities. Though Father Sheedy is no longer alive today, the leaders have dedicated themselves to keeping his dream alive.
